Boca Raton Critter Tip of the Month

Do all squirrels have rabies? - Squirrels are cute little critters that everyone seems to enjoy. Even if you don't particularly like them they are nothing more than a nuisance to most. They don't really want the squirrels around, but if they are there no one really seems to care. The one primary concern that most have is that squirrels have been known to carry rabies. Rabies is a very serious disease for humans, because if not treated right away it is impossible to treat later on. This is a life-threatening ailment that can be excruciating and will lead to one of the worst forms of death that a person can endure.

The problem is that many overreact to this. They worry that every squirrel they come across is a carrier of the disease when this is not the case. Some are carriers of the disease, but it usually no more than 12-20 percent of the total amount of squirrels that would find in a particular area. The thing is that even with that "low" of a number, this is still something to be concerned about. In the best case scenario, one out of every eight squirrels you encounter has rabies. I don't know about you but that is a frequent enough number to be concerned that you should avoid them. You simply should not take the risk.

If you happen to come into contact with a squirrel, the odds are for you that the critter does not have rabies, but you should not take the risk. You should avoid the critter and go in the other direction. Should you actually get bit by one, again, even though the risk is low, you should still go to a doctor right away. This is one of the most painful and horrific ways to die, and so you need to make sure that you get treated right away. I am not going to lie to you; these shots are incredibly painful, and usually occur over a two-week period of time, but they are much less painful than the alternative.

Not every squirrel will have rabies, but this is clearly a case of better safe than sorry. You have to look out for your health, and you simply cannot afford to take the risk of being bitten by one of these animals. Play it safe and play it smart and you will very happy that you did. Believe me it is much safer than the alternative, and will keep you alive and well.
