What is the best bait to trap a squirrel? - So you have a squirrel that is in your home and on your property and you have gone out to get a trap to try to catch it. You are ready to get rid of that pesky squirrel once and for all. Good for you. You have set up the trap where you know the squirrel is bound to go, but now you are looking for the proper bait to use to lure it into the trap so you can get rid of it. That bait can make all the difference.
First understand that squirrels are not very often out foraging for food that they are going to eat right away. They are animals that hunker down for the winter, and so they are looking for food that they can store. In other words, they need something that can survive for months without spoiling.
Many experts propose using sweets to get the squirrel into the trap, and this will have some success, but it is not ideal. The squirrel is thinking long-term and so it may eat a small amount of the sweets, but it will not likely get into the cage because it doesn't see this food as a long term solution.
What you want is something that will last, and this often means seeds or nuts. Ensure that they are in their natural state. A squirrel does not need salt or seasoning on the nuts or seeds. They want them just as they are. If you can get them in the shell, like walnuts or peanuts, that is ideal. This will be a very attractive target for the squirrel.
What you want to do is to build a small trail of the nuts or seeds leading into the trap. Do not provide too much food, or the squirrel may find it has enough to take back to its nest before it even gets in the cage. About four or five outside of the trap should be sufficient.
The bait should go all the way into the area where the door closes so that the squirrel will go deep enough into the cage to get trapped. Once it is caught you simply take the trap outside or to some area where you can release it and not worry about it returning to your home. You want to make sure that you wear gloves even when handling the cage so that you do not get scratched or bitten by the squirrel.
