Gainesville Critter Tip of the Month

How to catch a squirrel with a snare pole - Squirrels can be pesky animals that can cause problems for you. They are apt to get into about anything and will wreak havoc whenever they get the chance. It is just their nature to be troublemakers.

If you find that you have one of these little buggers in your home then your options to get rid of them may be limited. You may not have room for a big bulky trap in your home, and the last thing you want to do is to put poison all over waiting for the squirrel to eat it and die. Your own kids may get into that, and surely your pets will, and soon you may be costing the lives of a lot more than a dumb squirrel. This really limits your choice.

Some have chosen to use a snare pole to try to catch the little critter so that it can be taken outside and released. This can be an incredibly viable option, but you should first be aware that this takes some skill. If you have never used this to catch a wild animal before, then attempting to catch a squirrel as your first catch ever is not a good place to start. You are simply not going to have much success.

Before you try this what you want to do is to make sure that you protect your skin. If you corner the squirrel and it should get away, it may come right at you, and you don't want to get bit or scratched. You also want to make sure that you put on heavy gloves, not only to protect your hands in case the squirrel comes charging at you, but also to ensure that you have a tight grip on the pole. Your hands can easily slip and lose your grip on the pole and the squirrel can get away.

Also consider that squirrels move quickly and have incredible agility. What you are looking to do is to make sure you have it pinned before you make you move. You need to have it cornered in some way so that it cannot easily get away. If you are able to put up some kind of guard in front, like a huge piece of wood this is even more advantageous. The less room the squirrel has to maneuver the better.

Once you have it cornered move slowly toward the animal, and when you are close, quickly and precisely put the noose over the squirrel's neck until you have a good grip and pull. Hold the squirrel off the group for a minute or two until it stops squirming.
