Will the city or county animal services help me with a squirrel issue? While you may consider a squirrel in your home or a group of them invading your property, it is not likely that county or city government will view it in the same way. Their animal control people are likely very busy doing other things, and so they do not have the time to worry about catching a squirrel that is in your home. This means that you will either have to take care of it yourself or hire someone to do it. That is just the reality of life in this situation.
However there is a case where the animal control people will come out. That is if it is clear that the critter is sick or carrying a disease in some way. These professional civil servants understand that a squirrel that is ill is no longer just a nuisance. It poses a risk to any one or any animal that comes around it because if it were to bite someone or some pet it could make them sick.
Some squirrels carry diseases like rabies, and if they appear ill they need to be caught and euthanized. There is simply too much of a risk to let them just wander around hoping that they don't harm anyone or anything.
So how do you know if a squirrel is sick? There are some symptoms that are quite easy to see if you are looking. First look to see if you can tell if there is any kind of discharge around the mouth or the eyes. This is usually a great indicator if the animal is sick or not. This is especially true if you notice the discharge around the mouth of the squirrel. This is usually a big indicator of rabies, and you need to get animal control out there as quickly as possible.
Another way to tell if the animal is sick is by its behavior. To do many of the things that squirrels do, like climb trees or walk across telephone wires, they require great balance and skill to do so. If you notice that it seems to be walking around like it is drunk then you can be pretty sure that the animal is quite sick and will need to have animal control dispose of it.
This is also true if you see the squirrel acting aggressively with any other animal other than another squirrel. These are timid creatures, but when ill they will act out.
