San Francisco Critter Tip of the Month

Will repellents get a raccoon out of the attic? (None work well, except eviction fluid) - Many people have found themselves battling the scourge that is the raccoon in the attic. These beasts can be a serious nuisance in your home and so it is a necessity to do what is needed to get them out. Many look for differing ways to accomplish this, but the way that has gotten a lot of attention of late is the repellant.

Repellants come in both commercial models as well as homemade concoctions. These are very popular because the hope of many is that it will be a quick and easy to way to scare off the raccoon without having to pay an animal control specialist or do a great deal of other kinds of options to get rid of these animals. Here is an honest assessment of how well these things work.

First let's understand that the primary way that repellants work is by being an irritant to the raccoon. Many of these commercial brands use chemicals that are much akin to mace or hot peppers to try to keep raccoons away. Usually these are applied in none areas where the raccoon would eat to ruin their sources of food.

Many of the homemade suggestions use hot peppers, hot sauce or something similar to cause the raccoon pain so it will not return. These are applied in the same areas that one would apply commercial brands. Both have some success, but in most cases the success of repellants is in conjunction with other forms of deterrent. For example, if you leave your garbage can lids off all the time the raccoon may not always like the taste of the food, but it will keep coming back because it knows food is there. You have to close the lids and keep them secure to aid the repellant.

This is why repellants in your attic are very unlikely to keep raccoons out. Unless you are going to spray your entire attic with one of these repellants you are not going to keep them from returning this way. It just is not feasible, and spraying your entire attic with some chemical is not much of a solution either.

Some swear that eviction fluids are the exception. That these chemical compounds are very effective if applied over the entrance that the raccoons are using to enter your home. It is not that the fluid works to keep them away. How it best works is by getting rid of the raccoon for a time so that you can close entryways so it cannot get back in. In this way the eviction fluids work.
