How to keep raccoons out of my garbage cans - You may not like what is in your garbage cans, but a raccoon sees this is a buffet of fine treats to enjoy. Your leftovers are just the ticket to a nice meal, and so once they have made their way to your cans you can be sure that they will keep returning. You do the same thing after all. You go to the same grocery store or restaurants, so why should a raccoon be any different.
Once a raccoon has figured out that there are tasty treats in your garbage cans they can be hard to keep away. That does not mean it is impossible. There are things that you can do to make sure that they do not return.
The first thing to do is to remove the problem. If you can keep your garbage cans in the garage or in a shed then do so. If they do not have access they are going to eventually not return any longer. Simple logic.
Next, ensure that the lids to your garbage cans are secured tightly on the can. The raccoon is big enough to knock over the garbage can and if the lid is not on securely it will just pop off and the raccoon will be right back inside. You will not win this way. If the garbage can comes with clasps make sure that these are employed each time.
You may wonder what to do if the lids do not go on tightly. There is a way to fix this. Buy a piece of bungee cord rope and tie it to one side of the can. Run it over to the other side and back again and secure tightly. This will keep the lid tight in place just the way you want it. That will keep the raccoon from getting it off as long as the rope is secure.
Now there is one other thing you need to do if the garbage cans are outside. You want to make sure that when you throw out your garbage that you do not allow anything to spill on the ground around the garbage cans. This includes liquids that may have been in the bag. Even if there is nothing to get into, if it smells like there is something the raccoons are going to come.
If you want to add some additional security, put some commercial repellant around the cans for added protection. This should help to keep them away.
