St. Louis Critter Tip of the Month

What is a raccoon's natural diet? Raccoons are natural omnivores. What this means is that they will eat anything they can get their paws on, whether something is as meat, vegetable, sweet, or just trash. Raccoons love it all.

These are truly opportunistic eaters. They like such a wide variety of foods, and can adapt to virtually any habitat they are placed into. Theirs stomachs are made to eat just about anything, and they have an appetite to enjoy anything they find.

Even with this in mind there are some things that they will eat more regularly than other things. There are foods that they find more in the natural diet of what they enjoy on a regular basis.

The most common of these are naturally occurring things that one would find in a forest or glen somewhere. Raccoons love berries and soft fruits in particular, and they can be readily found in most areas where raccoons inhabit. They also will eat virtually any kind of nut, particularly acorns, and seeds as well. These are the kind of plant life that are most enjoyable, but they will eat virtually any kind of plant that is edible.

Raccoons will also eat fungi and algae as part of their diet. If they find these kinds of things in a forest or along a water they will enjoy themselves. In fact, raccoons have frequently been known to stand on a log or overhanging branch to scoop out some algae for a little light snack.

When near farms and gardens, raccoons love to eat corn and tomatoes in particular. They find these two vegetables to be quite enjoyable, but they will eat carrots, lettuce, cabbage, celery, and other vegetables in the garden. Pumpkins and melons are also quite popular when they find them.

In terms of animals, raccoons are most lured by eggs. While they will eat animals as well, the ease of grabbing eggs and walking off with them is much safer than having to subdue some animal or try to chase down some little lizard. This is why eggs are the preferred choice.

Raccoons will also eat a wide variety of other creatures. These include such things as small amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. They will also eat bugs, worms, and fish. Raccoons truly will eat virtually anything that comes their way, and if they are able to capture and coral it they will do so.

Of course a garbage can or dumpster always creates a hearty meal as well and, although, not natural, it is still a spot to find food.
