Suffolk County Critter Tip of the Month

How to keep squirrels out of my bird feeder - You love animals, especially birds, and want to do something nice for them. You went out and got a nice bird feeder, some seed and set it up off of your deck. The next thing you know there is a pesky squirrel that is sitting in the feeder eating all the seed and the bird is getting none. What the heck?

This is the plight that many face. They want to do a nice thing to take care of birds but an animal like this see the seed as the perfect food for it. Now your nice gesture has become a nightmare.

Squirrels will hunt for food where they can, but there are things that you can do to keep them away and out of your feeder. You just have to be smart about it.

First, you need to make sure that bird feeder is placed in a position that is hard to get to. Hooking it to the deck or to the side of your home in a way that makes it easily to climb into is not going to work. The squirrel is simply going to climb into it and eat up all the food.

A pole may seem like a great idea, but it has its problems as well. The squirrel is likely to learn that if it pushes on the pole the food will come out. This happens primarily because wind blows some of the seed onto the ground or the birds push it off, and the squirrel sees the seed down below so it knows some is there. It will then deduce that if it pushes on the pole more will come and your seed will be gone in no time.

The best place to put a bird feeder is hanging from the eaves of your home, although you must be smart about this. You cannot place it a few inches from the roof because the squirrel will simply crawl onto your roof and hang over the edge until it is on your feeder. You will lose that way.

Instead you need to put the feeder in close to the house so the squirrel has no chance to hang and reach it. If it does it will fall off the roof long before it reaches the seed and will be thwarted. Also put the feeder about 12 inches from the roof to make the challenge even greater. This should keep the squirrel away for sure.
