How to keep raccoons out of my bird feeder - Raccoons will look for food any place that they can find it. That means that your bird feeder is just as good of a source of food as your garbage can, a garden or a local dumpster. As sad as it is to say this is the reality. Here you are setting up a feeder so that birds have some place to perch and enjoy a meal and some dumb raccoon is ruining your generosity. How messed up is that?
You may have even made some pretty crafty decisions to keep the feeder free from thieves taking the food, like putting the feeder on a pole, but here comes some raccoon pushing on the pole and bam! Down comes the food. That sure is messed up for sure.
Keeping a raccoon from getting at the feeder can be a real challenge, because the smart decisions you make don't work. You could hang it from your home, but if the raccoon can get onto the roof and hit the feeder it will get to the food. The same is true of hanging it from a tree branch. These crafty little animals are relentless.
To begin, if you are going to make this work then keep the seeds from off the ground below the feeder. Everyone knows that birds are messy as well, and they will toss the seeds down to the ground as they are eating. A raccoon comes along and sees the food, looks up and sees the feeder, figures out that the food is coming from there and your problem is about to become bigger.
You can buy special feeders that make it harder to kick the food out. Also, there are catchers that you can buy that will capture the food as it falls below out of the feeder so that it does not land on the ground. If the raccoon does not know it is there then it cannot get to it.
Hanging the feeder is the best way to keep the raccoon away, but it must be put in a place that cannot be reached by the raccoon. Many simply hook it to the eave, but if a relentless raccoon can reach it by hanging over your roof it will do so. Put the feeder at least 14 inches from any edge so that it is much more difficult to reach. This will keep even the most crafty of raccoons away from the feeder, and give your birds a place to enjoy a meal.
